When Christiana was a young girl in Twifo-Hemang, she would walk the village, gather the crying children and bring them back to her home to care for them until their parents came home from working the fields. Dealing with extreme poverty herself, she could never dream where life would take her, but she promised herself, "If I am ever able, I will build a school for these children so they have a safe and loving place to be."
Decades later she ended up in Waco, Texas while her husband was working towards his doctorate in Religion at Baylor University. As she got to know the people at her church, she shared her long-held dream and they began to dream and plan with her.
Shalom Children's Center started as a preschool, but now the school not only cares for the pre-schoolers of Hemang, but has expanded to educate and care for children through Jr. High.
Without Christiana and Robert Owusu, we most likely would not know about the needs of some of God's most vulnerable, but we are all better for having her shine a light and show us!
